What is Invokana?

Invokana (canagliflozin) is a modern antidiabetic agent manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2013, this newer medication acts by forcing the kidneys to eliminate excess blood glucose through the urines to achieve blood sugar control.

In 2015, however, the regulator found that all drugs in the SGLT2 inhibitors class to be dangerous enough to issue a black box warning. Together with similar medications such as Farxiga (dapagliflozin), and  Jardiance (empagliflozin), Invokana was linked with many side effects such as bladder cancer, pancreatitis, kidney failure and increased cholesterol. These adverse reactions were just the tip of the iceberg though.

Why is Invokana dangerous to your health?

When Invokana forces the kidneys to excrete glucose, the sugar removed through the urines creates a perfect environment for bacteria to proliferate. The most common side effect associated with the use of this medication is, in fact, a urinary tract infection (UTI), which may grow to significant proportions in diabetic people.

Canagliflozin may also predispose patients to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a hazardous condition with potentially lethal consequences. Before the FDA changed the drug’s label to warn patients about this danger, at least 120 patient required emergency hospitalization for DKA in the US and Europe.

Other alarming consequences of the use of this drug include a significantly increased risk of strokes, heart attacks and diabetes complications which may lead to foot amputation. Treatment with Invokana may also decrease bone density, increasing the chance of severe bone fractures occurring after a fall or even just a minor trauma.

Why should you file an Invokana lawsuit today?

On May 6, 2015, the prestigious Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) published a report which proved that canagliflozin’s risks outweigh its benefits. However, the drugmaker never cared about warning doctors and patients about these potentially fatal hazards. Despite the many dangers posed by this medication, the manufacturer even illegally promoted Invokana as an off-label weight loss pill which can also lower blood pressure. The FDA, however, never approved it for any of these additional indications, nor any study proved its efficacy or safety in these instances.

A plaintiff, Luana Jean Collie, filed a litigation in the U.S. Southern District of Alabama against J&& and Janssen, accusing them of negligence and off-label advertising. Many other victims of this anti-diabetes agent’s dangerous consequences are now seeking compensation in court. Some like Paula Brazil of Dalton, Georgia suffered from the life-long consequences of DKA, while others have to struggle with the pain of an amputated limb or a renal transplant after a kidney failure.

How is filing a litigation going to help you?

On December 2016, the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation decided to centralize all Invokana lawsuits in a single MDL Products Liability Litigation No. 2750. Overseen by Honorable Judge Brian R. Martinotti, the mass tort was centralized in the U.S. District of New Jersey court. As per September 2017, a total of 670 civil actions have been filed by attorneys across the whole country on behalf of their clients.
